Grants for gender equality

Introduction

You can apply to the Northern Territory (NT) Government for financial grants to support your research, study, event, organisation or community group.

The following pages outline all of the:

  • grants that specifically target gender inequalities experienced by Territorians
  • activities aimed at increasing gender equality in the NT.

General grants for gender equality

If you have a project that aims to increase gender equality in the Northern Territory (NT), you can apply for a general grant of up to $5,000.

The Office of Gender Equity and Diversity general grants program offers two funding rounds each year.

When you can apply

Round one is open from July to December.

Round two is open from January to May.

Who can apply

To apply, you must be:

  • an NT resident if applying as an individual
  • an organisation based and registered in the NT.

You must also show that the funds will contribute to a positive outcome that supports gender equality for all Territorians.

Projects that are allowed

Projects that will be considered must address gender inequities that exist in at least two of the following areas:

  • education, employment and economic security
  • safety
  • health and wellbeing
  • participation and representation in leadership and decision-making
  • respect and empowerment.

Projects must meet all of the following:

  • be consistent with the aims of the grants program
  • have identifiable outcomes and project objectives
  • be part of a comprehensive plan to address an identified need
  • not have commercially oriented objectives
  • be completed within the proposed timeframe unless otherwise agreed.

Examples of projects that may get funding

Your project could:

  • contribute to reduce the gender pay gap or support efforts to achieve a gender balance in education, employment and economic security
  • reduce gender-based violence or increase community safety
  • encourage positive, gendered health outcomes and wellbeing
  • facilitate and promote equitable leadership, participation and representation
  • promote respect, counter stigma, prejudice or humiliation.

Examples of projects that will not get funding

Grants will not be given for projects that involve any of the following:

  • any activity:
    • of a political party nature
    • of a commercial or business nature
    • that relates to personal professional development for individuals
  • alcoholic beverages for the event or function
  • set-up or running costs of a business, purchase of capital equipment (including hardware or software)
  • retrospective funding for projects, functions or services that have already started or been completed or items that have already been provided or previously purchased
  • projects by organisations established for profit or financial gain or increased membership
  • projects that duplicate existing services available to the community
  • deficit budgets
  • real estate purchases
  • management or administration fees of the organisation or wages for staff
  • promotion and advertising of the project
  • fees in association with printing and stationery costs for the project
  • other items that the panel assess as not meeting the aims or objectives of the grants.

How to apply

You can apply for the grant through GrantsNT.

If you haven't created a profile on GrantsNT, you will need to set one up before applying for any grant.

To apply, go to the GrantsNT website.

After you apply

You will receive an email when your application has been received.

It may take up to six weeks for your application to be assessed.

If you are successful

If you are successful, you will have to sign a grant agreement.

This means you must complete the project funded by the grant under law.

When your project has finished

You must send all of the following documents to the Office of Gender Equity and Diversity within six weeks of your event finishing:


Minister for Equality scholarships

Northern Territory (NT) students at Charles Darwin University (CDU) can apply for a Minister for Equality scholarship.

The scholarship can help with the cost of their vocational education and training (VET) or higher education.

There will be 7 recipients in total.

VET

Below are the VET scholarships available.

There are two $5,000 VET scholarships to help women pay for their study at CDU or the Bachelor Institute of Indigenous Tertiary Education (BIITE).

Who can apply

To apply, you must be:

  • female or identify as female
  • enrolled in a certificate III, IV or diploma VET course at CDU
  • an NT resident.

How to apply

To apply, follow these steps:

Step 1. Apply online on the CDU website. A new scholarship round opens before every semester.

Step 2. You also need to submit a supporting statement that includes all of the following:

  • a short biography that includes:
    • your background
    • reasons why you're applying for the scholarship
    • why you have chosen the area of study
    • your future plans and ambitions.
  • your commitment to the NT and how you intend to use your skills in this area
  • your passion, ability and initiative in your approach to study
  • your economic, social, cultural or geographical disadvantage.

This is a $5,000 VET scholarship to support women in the NT to undertake study or training opportunities in non-traditional (male-dominated) trades such as:

  • agriculture and aquaculture
  • air-conditioning and refrigeration
  • automotive
  • barbering
  • building and civil construction.

Who can apply

To apply, you must be:

  • female or identify as female
  • enrolled in an undergraduate or postgraduate level course at CDU
  • an NT resident.

How to apply

To apply, follow these steps:

Step 1. Apply online on the CDU website. A new scholarship round opens before every semester.

Step 2. Submit a supporting statement which includes all of the following:

    • reasons you're applying for the scholarship

This is a $5,000 VET scholarship aimed at increasing the number of men in non-traditional (female-dominated) occupations such as:

  • care
  • health
  • teaching
  • nursing or
  • early childhood education.

In addition to the scholarship money, you will also receive $1,200 to buy a laptop.

Who can apply

To apply, you must be:

  • male or identify as male
  • enrolled in an undergraduate or postgraduate level course at CDU
  • an NT resident.

Below are the higher education scholarships available.

This is a $15,000 scholarship to study at CDU, including at the Australian Centre for Indigenous Knowledge and Education.

In addition to the scholarship money, you will also receive $1,200 to buy a laptop.

Who can apply

To apply, you must be:

  • female or identify as female
  • enrolled in an undergraduate or postgraduate level course at CDU
  • an NT resident.

How to apply

To apply, follow these steps:

Step 1. Apply online on the CDU website. This scholarship is only offered in semester one.

Step 2. Submit a supporting statement which includes all of the following:

  • a short biography that includes:
    • your background
    • reasons you're applying for the scholarship
    • why you have chosen the area of study

  • your commitment to the NT and how you intend to use your skills in this area
  • your passion, ability and initiative in your approach to study

  • science
  • information technology or
  • engineering.

How you'll be paid

If you're selected for the scholarship, you'll get $2,500 per semester for:

  • 2 semesters for VET
  • 6 semesters for higher education.

The payment will be made to your nominated bank account until:

  • you complete your course
  • you no longer meet the eligibility requirements
  • the maximum value of your scholarship has been paid.

Ongoing eligibility

To keep your scholarship, you will need to:

  • pass more than 50% of your enrolled load each semester and
  • not fail the same unit 2 or more times.

Your scholarship will be taken away if:

  • you withdraw from your course after the start of your first semester
  • you breach any conditions of your scholarship or
  • CDU finds you guilty of serious misconduct.

International Women's Day grants

International Women’s Day is celebrated around the world each year on 8 March to recognise the economic, political and social achievements of women. Read more about International Women's Day.

If you are planning to hold an event to celebrate the day you can apply for a grant of up to $3,000 from the Office of Gender Equity and Diversity to help run your event.

Grants to support International Women’s Day 2024 will open on 1 October and close on 13 November 2023.

You must be one of the following:

  • a resident of the NT
  • an organisation based and registered in the NT.

You must also be able to show that you can contribute to the project through other funding or support, and that you can manage the project's budget.

You can apply for funding for activities that do at least two of the following:

  • celebrate International Women's Day
  • celebrate women's diversity and social, political and economic achievements
  • educate the community about International Women's Day
  • encourage reflection and discussion about issues on gender inequality
  • encourages community participation in International Women's Day.

Your project or event must also do all of the following:

  • have a need for financial assistance
  • have an itemised budget
  • include an outline of how the activity will be promoted
  • have identifiable objectives and outcomes
  • be completed within the proposed time frame
  • show that the funds will result in a positive outcome and advance the social, political, economic or civil status of women in the NT.

Grants cannot be given or used for any of the following:

  • political activity
  • commercial or business activity
  • alcohol
  • projects already underway
  • profit-making projects
  • deficit budgets
  • real estate purchases
  • administration or management fees
  • wages
  • printing and stationery costs
  • projects that are the same as existing events.

Applications for International Women’s Day 2024 open on 1 October and close on 13 November 2023.

Grants are available through GrantsNT.

Successful grants

If you are successful you will have to sign a grant agreement.

This means you must complete the project funded by the grant under law.

  • a written evaluation
  • copies of promotional material
  • receipts and invoices
  • photos
  • a grant acquittal form from the Office of Gender Equity and Diversity.

Men's Places grant program

If you have a project to support men’s places, you can apply for a grant of up to $10,000 per applicant.

You can use the grant to support a range of activities such as:

  • information sessions
  • skills development
  • health and wellbeing programs
  • education and peer-to-peer support programs
  • parenting programs and equipment.
