Park Management

Managing Parks and Reserves is a complicated balancing act of maintaining a comprehensive and representative system of Parks, protecting biodiversity, cultural and heritage values and serving visitor and community needs for education and enjoyment.

The Parks and Wildlife Service manages more than 4.7 million hectares, approximately 3.5 per cent (%) of Northern Territory’s land area.

To achieve a world class Park system which balances the need to protect the Territories most valuable assets whilst encouraging local economies and providing unforgettable experiences for thousands of visitors, planning is essential.

The Parks and Wildlife Service has been managing Parks in shared arrangements with Aboriginal traditional owners for over 25 years, so Joint management is not new to the Territory.

The first joint managed Park in the Territory was Garig Gunak Barlu National Park on the Cobourg Peninsula. Of the 87 Parks currently managed by the Parks and Wildlife Service, 32 are jointly managed with Aboriginal people.
