Leanyer Recreation Park
Stage 2 Development
In February 2008 the Northern Territory Government announced it would build waterslides at Leanyer Recreation Park, as part of a Stage 2 redevelopment to the popular park in Darwin.
Final plans were unveiled and tenders called for in June 2008, which included new moguls for BMX riders and skaters, more barbeques and shaded areas, as well as three waterslides.
Construction began in September 2008 as the Stage 2, $5.2million project commenced taking shape, as a free recreation area for families. More than 100,000 visitors use the Park each year and that number is expected to increase with the new facilities.
In total, eight tenders were awarded as part of the Stage 2 redevelopment. These developments include:
- three new 14 metre high waterslides, each more than 100 metres long
- new moguls for BMX riders and skaters
- a new skate park half pipe
- an administration and First Aid building
- a kiosk upgrade
- an increased car parking capacity
- additional lifeguard towers
- additional shade and BBQ areas
A map (pdf 347Kb) and pictures of the additional facilities and amenities at the Park is available for viewing.
The waterslides, new moguls, skate park half pipe, increased car parking, lifeguard towers and additional shade and barbeque areas will be available for use on the Family Fun Day Sunday 29 March 2009 – and best of all, its all free!!.
The administration and First Aid building will be complete by April 2009.
The original upgrade to the park was completed in 2004 and involved the creation of an extensive water playground with dumping bucket, swimming pool and toddler pools, skate park and basketball courts.
