Leanyer Recreation Park

Leanyer Recreation Park is a place to chill out and have fun. Here where the suburbs meet the bush, people can escape from the heat of the streets and the pressures of their daily lives. Entrance is free.

There is something for everyone - a Water Park with a swimming area, 3 waterslides and water playground, an all abilities playground, places to skate and ride bikes and a basketball court. There are also shaded barbeques and picnic areas. Persons riding the waterslides must be at least 1.1 metres (110cm) in height for safety reasons.

The Leanyer Recreation Park is open from 8am to 8pm everyday and on school holidays. The swimming area and water playground are open from 10am to 7pm Monday to Sunday, while the Water Slides open from 11am.

Schools and organised groups are requested to contact the park office on 8927 4199 to make a booking so that overcrowding is avoided. A permit at no cost will generally be issued.

How to Get There

The Leanyer Recreation Park is located approximately 15 km from Darwin City Centre on the boundaries of the suburbs of Leanyer, Malak and Wulagi. Access is off Vanderlin Drive. A bus stop is located close to the Park on Vanderlin Drive.

When to Visit

The Reserve is accessible all year round.

What to See and Do

BBQ facilities are available and picnic tables are located close by. The skatepark and basketball court provide quality facilities to those people who enjoy these sporting activities.

There are gas BBQ's and picnic tables located within the Park. There are drinking water outlets at various locations around the Park, and toilet facilities are also available for community use. The skatepark and basketball court provides recreational facilities for a section of the population.

Please Remember

Safety and comfort

  • Observe pool rules posted on the gate and pool fence.
  • Babies and toddlers need to wear waterproof nappies.
  • No alcohol is permitted in the Park.
  • Observe park safety signs.
  • Wear a shady hat, sunscreen and insect repellent.
  • Wear suitable clothing and footwear.
  • Avoid strenuous activity during the heat of the day.
  • Beware of theft, lock vehicles and secure valuables.

Please remember

  • Put your rubbish in the bin or take it away with you.
  • Pets are not permitted in this Reserve.
  • Check that your vehicle is not transporting pests like weeds and Cane Toads.

Recreational Activities

  • Skatepark
    The skatepark is a quality facility which provides challenges to the experienced skater.
  • Baseball Court
    The basketball court is available to all visitors and groups. Floodlights are available so that the facility can be used in the evening.
  • Cycling Path
    A bitumen cycling path is located at the gate to the Park. This cycle path leads to other suburbs in the area. Cycling paths within the Park can be used by inexperienced cyclists, and also by skaters.
  • Picnic Tables
    Picnic facilities are available at Leanyer Recreation Park including tables and gas BBQ's. A kiosk is open at various times of the day.
  • Swimming
    A new water facility including a swimming pool, children's paddling pools and a water playground facility have been opened recently. Lifeguards are on duty at the times the pools and the water playground are operating and open to visitors. Young children under the age of 10 years need to be supervised by parents or carers.
  • Waterslides
    Three waterslides, each 14 metres in height and each over 100 metres in length, are available free of charge to use at the park. Persons riding the slides must be at least 1.1 metres (110cm) in height for safety reasons.

Plants and Animals

A variety of birds can be seen at the Park. Many species come in from the surrounding bushland seeking water. These species include Ibis, Burdekin Ducks, Native Doves and Plovers.
