What this Means for Land Owners

Private landholders are already conserving land in a range of ways – from the purchase of whole properties and large scale Indigenous Protected Areas to the setting aside of small areas for critical habitat. The Territory Government recognises that all these efforts are legitimate and have an expanded role to play.

The Territory Eco-link is about helping landholders manage conservation on their own land and there will be no compulsory land acquisitions. Landholders are able to sign agreement which will protect their land forever or utilise one of the other options for shorter term more flexible protection. Protection can be applied to the whole of a property or to specific parts of a property that have special value.

Assistance is available to Land owners who do enter a conservation conveant in perpetuity. Assistance might be in the form of support for surveying, registering, fencing, removing threats and management planning for the covenanted area.
