The appointment of the inaugural George Chaloupka Research Fellow was announced at a gala dinner organised by the Museums and Art Galleries of the Northern Territory Foundation Ltd in Darwin on Wednesday 12th August 2009.
Mr Rob Atkinson, Chief Executive Officer of Energy Resources of Australia Ltd announced Mr Ben Gunn of Victoria as the successful recipient.
Ben will undertake the detailed recording of Nawarla Gabarnmung, a major rock art site in Western Arnhem Land. The site is the largest and most decorated shelter within a complex of rock art sites near the headwaters of the Katherine River, in the centre of the Arnhem Land plateau.
Ben will be documenting the site and will present his final report to the Museums and Art Galleries Board of the Northern Territory. He will also be presenting his findings at a public seminar to be held early in 2010.
Ben Gunn has worked as an archaeologist for the past 26 years, has recorded rock art in many areas of Australia and has published his findings extensively. He has worked with the Jawoyn Association for the past four years, recording rock art sites in Jawoyn Lands. He is also a founding member of the Australian Rock Art Research Association
The George Chaloupka Research Fellowship is sponsored by ERA and was established by the Museums and Art Galleries Board of the Northern Territory and the Museums and Art Galleries of the Northern Territory Foundation Ltd.
The Fellowship is valued at $25 000 and was created in honour of renowned rock art historian and Curator Emeritus Dr George Chaloupka OAM FAHA.
The Fellowship is granted to an individual to conduct research, with a view to publication in one or more of the following areas:
- Recording / data collection of rock art sites in Western Arnhem Land in areas not yet surveyed through the work of Emeritus Curator Dr George Chaloupka OAM FAHA or other researchers
- Interpretation of sites by custodians / traditional owners
- Preservation of rock art
- Dating of rock art
- Researching / documenting the work of Emeritus Curator Dr George Chaloupka OAM FAHA held at MAGNT
Call for Applications for the 2010 George Chaloupka Research Fellowship sponsored by ERA will be released in February 2010.
