Careers at NRETA

National Indigenous Cadetship Project (NICP)

As part of its commitment to achieve a more representative number of Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander people in the Northern Territory Public Sector (NTPS) workforce, the NTPS offers Cadetships to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.  The aim is to assist them in gaining tertiary qualifications and ongoing employment in the NTPS.

The NICP is a career development program which offers, both during and on completion of their tertiary studies, opportunities for Indigenous people to be employed in the NTPS.  Current NTPS Indigenous employees are also eligible to apply for this cadetship.

The Cadetship program involves students studying full-time and working in the respective agencies during the major semester breaks as part of the on-the-job component of the program.

Applicants must meet strict eligibility criteria as follows:

  • be of Australian Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent;
  • be an Australian resident; and
  • be enrolled for full-time study, or intending to study full-time at; Diploma, Advanced Diploma or Undergraduate Degree.  (If Cadet is completing Year 12 at the time of application for a cadetship, a copy of their application for admission to university is required.  However, confirmation of enrolment is required prior to any offers being made).

The intake for cadets occurs at the beginning of the academic year.  Advertising occurs in October-November each year.  Advertising is carried out in Northern Territory newspapers and on the NTG Employment Opportunities website (www.nt.gov.au/jobs).  Additional advertising is carried out by the Department of Business and Employment (DBE) at career expos, senior school career nights and university information sessions.
