Trade and Investment

The Department of the Chief Minister coordinates the Government's efforts to grow the Territory's international trade and to secure new investment, particularly through the facilitation of major economic development projects.

Key priorities over the coming year include the development of gas industries in Darwin, new trade and shipping links with the Asian region, and developing Darwin as a tropical harbour city.

The Department delivers an investment attraction campaign to promote Territory trade and business opportunities across Australia and throughout the wider Asian region. This campaign also seeks to market the Territory as an exciting place to live, work and invest, and to attract new skilled residents to help realise these opportunities. Examples of the marketing the Territory include presentations at conferences, to companies, and publications such as Territory Q.

The Department works with other government agencies to assist the private sector in developing major projects such as the $3 billion Bayu-Undan gas field, $750 million 500km pipeline to Darwin, the $1.75 billion Darwin Liquefied Natural Gas Plant, Alcan’s $3.0 billion expansion of the Gove Alumina Refinery and the Blacktip onshore gas and pipeline projects.

The Department promotes the Territory’s competitive advantages and works to build closer economic ties with our Asian neighbours. We work in partnership with key stakeholders, including industry, professional associations, peak bodies, investors and government counterparts to secure economic growth and employment for the Territory. We develop commercial business cases to attract companies such as Tiger Airways to the Territory.

Delegations and Conferences

The Department of the Chief Minister coordinates the Chief Minister’s investment delegations to promote investment opportunities in the Territory, both overseas and nationally. A Territory presence at key national and international business events helps to stimulate demand for Territory products and services, develop the AustralAsia Trade Route and attract investment into key Territory industries.

Skilled Worker Attraction Campaign

High economic growth and major development projects have fuelled demand for a range skilled trades and professions in the Territory. In response, the Territory Government is running an information campaign to increase the number of new skilled workers and professionals moving to the Northern Territory.
