Women's Forum

What is a women’s forum?

Women’s forums have been instigated to give women an opportunity to raise issues and ideas directly with Ms Marion Scrymgour MLA as Minister for Women’s Policy.

Women’s forums:

  • link Territory women with the Government and each other
  • provide women with an opportunity to raise issues and ideas on behalf of their communities
  • provide information on Government policies and programs both during and after forums
  • promote opportunities for women to become involved in public processes such as inquiries and reviews.

Forums are organised by the Office of Women’s Policy in collaboration with Community Cabinet.

Read about the forums in the combined Community Cabinet and Women's Forum Newsletters (since 2006) or the Women's Forum Newsletters for forums prior to 2006.

What happens during a women’s forum?

The forums usually take place over three to four hours.

There are two parts. The first focuses on identification of the issues women wish to raise. Small groups are often formed to assist in identifying those things that are working well in the community, the changes that would improve community life, and how these might occur.

The second part involves sharing these issues and ideas with Minister Scrymgour. Information is usually available on government agencies, key policies and programs, and contact details. Information or training sessions may be included, depending on local needs.

What are the benefits of attending a women’s forum?

During the forum:

  • The opportunity to raise issues and ideas direct with the Minister for Women’s Policy
  • The ability to meet, share ideas and develop networks with local women
  • Information about government programs of direct interest.

Following the forum:

  • Receipt of a newsletter, with information on government policies and programs in the area visited and based on forum discussions, together with contact details should follow up action be required
  • An opportunity to receive letters from Ministers responding to local concerns.

Can’t attend the women’s forum in your area but would like to contribute?

Women can still have a say about issues affecting their communities and their lives by sending an email to womensforums@nt.gov.au, preferably before the forum takes place. These ideas can then be discussed and developed by the women attending the forum.
